Garmin Ique M3
With the release of the iQue m3, Garmin tries some different tactics to eliminate some of the user issues that were part of its predecessor, the Garmin m5 iQue PDA. This has meant some paring down of the PDA features, which may or may not have much of an impact on those who are fans of Garmin. Here’s are some details on what to expect with the newer Garmin iQue handheld PDA. Retaining the Windows Mobile SE operating system that was part of the m5 model of the Garmin iQue PDA, the iQue m3 works with 64MB of RAM, with roughly 47 MB available for use. This remaining RAM is further divided up to handle the program memory and storage memory, which will leave you with around 23MB of RAM to work with. While this will allow you to get around pretty easily, you will not be in a position to store a lot of maps on your m3, so you may want to make sure you keep a memory card handy for any maps that you will need to pull up on a recurring basis. When it comes to ROM, the iQue m3 comes with 32 MB of flash memory. Just about all of it is taken up by the operating system, but there is around 2 MB left. There is not a lot you can do with that amount when it comes to maps and such, but if you can find a use for it, the space is there.
You will have all the usual docking ability that you have come to rely on with any Garmin product. There is the USB sync cable that will help you communicate with your personal computer; the automotive charging cradle, which has the built in power cord; and the optional USB cable that you can use to interact with other devices. Of course, there is also an AC power cable that you can use to charge your m3 when needed.
Unfortunately, the battery for the m3 is the same as in past releases from Garmin. It is fixed and not one that the consumer can replace. Fortunately, the batteries stand up to a great deal of recharging, so you will not have to worry about sending off your m3 for battery replacement any time soon. Just make sure you do not let the unit run down. Protecting the battery is one of the high quality Garmin PDA iQue aluminum cases. Long a part of the standard package of Garmin products, these cases will provide nice cover for the Garmin iQue PDA battery and make sure nothing interferes with the integrity of its ability to take a charge. Some of the scaled back suite of features on the discount Garmin m3 iQue PDA appear to be in order to offer the PDA at a more affordable price. While it is always good to get something at a bargain, what remains in the cheap Garmin m3 iQue PDA may not be enough to entice users away from other brands. Time will tell if the strategy will work.
